Learner Licence Course

Post Course Information

Congratulations on successfully completing the Learner Licence Course. This page contains information relevant to obtaining your "R" Class Learner Licence and the options available to you.

Obtaining your “R” Class Learner Licence

  • Your Learner Licence Course results will be at the Motor Vehicle Registry, after 10:00 am on the next working day.  Do not attend MVR beforehand as they may not be able to process your “R” Class Learner Licence

  • If you do not hold an existing NT Licence of another class, you will be required to complete a Licence Application form.

  • You will need to supply proof of identity (that is your current NT licence) and pay the prescribed fee to obtain your “R(L)” Learner's licence.

  • You DO NOT hold a Rider Learner licence until this has been completed.

  • If you have not already done so you will need to complete a Rider Theory Test. You can book in to do that test at any MVR branch

Conditions attached to your Motorcycle Learner Licence are:

  • You are permitted to ride only motorcycles identified on the Learner Approved Motorcycle list. The list is restricted to motorcycles that meet the correct power to weight ratio (150 kilowatts per tonne) with an engine capacity up to 660 ml.

  • Your blood alcohol content must not exceed 0.00%.

  • You are not allowed to carry a pillion passenger.

  • You must not exceed 80 kilometres per hour.

  • You must display an 'L' plate in a conspicuous place at the rear of the motorcycle. The “L” plate must not obscure the numberplate, any lights or reflectors.

NB a motorcyclist learner licence “R(L)(r)” is valid for 2 years however you can not proceed to the next level licence until you have completed a continuous 6 month period on your “L’s”. After this time has elapsed you are eligible to book onto the Restricted Licence Course.

Demerit points and how they affect your R(L) licence
All open licence holders have their points action trigger set at 12 points within any 3 year period. This means that 11 points are acceptable, however 12 or more points will trigger action against you. Learners will be subject to 5 points or more within 12 months. If they don’t reach this trigger, they will be subject to the 12 points within the 3 years trigger.

We look forward to seeing you on your next riding course!!
