Restricted Licence Course

Post Course Information

Congratulations on your successful completion of the Restricted Licence Course.

  • Your course paperwork will be available at the Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR), from 10:00 a.m, on the next working day.

  • Issue of your "R(r)" Licence, at the prescribed fee, will require you to supply proof of identity (your drivers/riders licence is sufficient).

  • You may still ride, using your current "R" Learners Licence (continuing to observe Learner restrictions) until upgrading.

Restrictions on your R(r) licence are:

  • You are permitted to ride only motorcycles identified on the Learner Approved Motorcycle list. The list is restricted to motorcycles that meet the correct power to weight ratio (150 kilowatts per tonne) with an engine capacity up to 660 cc.

  • You must not carry a pillion passenger.

  • If you are under twenty-five years of age and within your first three years of holding a vehicle licence, you may be under a zero blood alcohol concentration (BAC) 0.00% restriction. Check with MVR staff!

Provisional (“P”) licence holders are required to observe these additional restrictions:

  • Your blood alcohol content (BAC) must not exceed 0.00%.

  • You must not exceed 100 kilometres per hour.

  • You must display a “P” plate in clear view at the rear of your motorcycle. The “P” plate must not cover or impede the function of any lights, reflectors or the number plate.

Paying for your licence upgrade

You can pay for your licence upgrade:

  • at an MVR office

  • by calling the Contact Centre on 1300 654 628

  • online through the Territory Services website (3 business days after the course) if:

    • you are upgrading to a restricted rider licence

    • your car licence is not due to expire

If this is your first licence, the provisional period is 24 months. Otherwise it will match the remaining provisional period on your car licence.

Your licence will automatically upgrade to an open capacity motorcycle after completion of 12 months on your R(r) licence (unless your licence has Provisional conditions attached).
